eSIM QR Code Not Working? Use the Right Recovery Path

A clear, security-conscious guide to eSIM QR-code errors, manual setup options and when to ask the provider for a replacement.

Treat the QR code as an activation credential

A QR code for an eSIM is not a decorative image. It can contain the path to add a carrier plan, and its use may be limited by the provider. Keep it private: do not post it in a chat, review, or support forum, and do not forward it to someone offering unofficial help. Start by checking that the code came from the provider’s legitimate order or account flow and that you are scanning it with the phone that will use the plan.

Use a stable Wi-Fi connection. Clean the camera lens, display the code at a readable size, and avoid a dim or cracked screen. If you are trying to scan a code displayed on the same phone, use the provider’s authorised alternate method instead of photographing a screen. Apple supports carrier links, carrier apps, and manual entry when the provider supplies the necessary information; on iPhone, the manual route is Cellular/Mobile Data > Add Cellular Plan > Enter Details Manually.

Use the maker’s menu, not a lookalike app

Exact wording changes with operating system and manufacturer. Samsung’s UK guidance, for example, describes Settings > Connections > SIM card manager > Add mobile plan, followed by QR-code or activation-code choices when those methods are offered by the network provider. This is a useful device-specific example, not a claim that every Android phone has the same path.

If the device says the code is invalid, used, or unsupported, stop retrying and contact the provider through its official channel. Ask whether the code is single-use, whether it was already consumed, whether the plan is assigned to the right EID, and whether manual details or a replacement are available. Never guess an activation address or confirmation code.

Keep the recovery request brief

Send the order reference, exact error, device model and regional variant, OS version, country, and whether the profile appears in settings. Redact full identifiers unless the provider’s secure channel specifically requests them. Do not delete an installed profile just to scan again; ask first whether deletion would prevent reinstallation.

If you received a broader activation error, continue with eSIM Activation Failed: What to Check Before You Retry. If the plan installed but has no internet, use eSIM Installed but No Mobile Data. For the information support normally needs, open The eSIM Support Diagnostic Checklist.
