eSIM Installed but No Mobile Data

Your eSIM appears in settings but the internet will not work? Follow a safe data-line, roaming and provider-settings checklist.

Check which line is carrying data

An installed eSIM is not automatically the data connection. With two lines present, the phone needs a selected cellular-data line. On iPhone, Apple’s travel guidance points to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data to choose the line; keeping both lines active can still leave the home line capable of generating roaming charges depending on its plan. On Android, labels and menus differ by maker and version, so confirm the data-SIM selection in the device’s network settings rather than relying on a generic screenshot.

Before altering settings, test a simple web page with Wi-Fi turned off. Note whether there are signal bars, a 4G/5G/LTE indicator, or an error only inside one app. A working signal plus failed data has a different support path from total loss of service.

Review roaming and plan instructions carefully

Many travel eSIMs need data roaming enabled on the travel line, but follow the eSIM provider’s own setup instructions. “Roaming” here describes how the plan connects to a visited network; it does not promise that your home plan’s EU roaming entitlement applies to a travel eSIM. Keep data roaming disabled on the home line if you do not want that line to use data, subject to the phone’s own controls and your needs for calls or SMS.

Do not assume an APN should be edited. Some providers configure it automatically, while others supply a specific value. Enter only the provider’s documented value, exactly as supplied, and do not copy values from another company. Google’s Pixel help groups mobile-data checks with network type, signal strength, 5G compatibility, SIM activation, and network-settings reset; that order is a useful reminder not to jump straight to a reset.

Escalate with a test result

Note country, city, selected data line, signal indicator, roaming toggle state, and the result of one browser test. Then ask the provider whether the profile is active, whether the destination is included, and whether manual APN or network selection is required. Avoid deleting the profile until the provider confirms replacement or re-download rules.
