No Signal After Installing an eSIM in Europe

Work through a calm, practical order for an eSIM that shows no signal in Europe, from line status to provider escalation.

First, separate “no service” from “no data”

A blank signal indicator, “No Service,” or an emergency-only message means the phone is not registered for usable cellular service on that line. That is different from having signal but no internet. Do not change every setting at once: you lose the clue that tells support what failed. Start in the place where the eSIM was added and confirm that its line is visible and turned on. On iPhone, Apple suggests checking whether the number appears in Cellular, toggling the line, briefly using Airplane Mode, and restarting before moving on.

Make a short, reversible check

Connect to trusted Wi-Fi if you can. Confirm that the travel line is enabled, that Airplane Mode is off, and that you are actually in a destination covered by the plan you purchased. Check the provider’s activation instructions for any arrival-time step. A profile can be downloaded without being eligible to register yet, and an eSIM-capable handset still needs a compatible regional variant, operating system, carrier status, and provider support.

If the phone offers network selection, leave it on automatic first. Manual selection is useful only when the provider has told you which visited network to try. A failure on one local network is not proof that every network or country is unavailable. Near a border, a device can latch onto a stronger signal from another country; Ofcom notes that accidental roaming can happen in border regions.

Keep evidence for the provider

Write down the exact message, local time, country and city, whether the signal bars ever appeared, phone model, OS version, and the eSIM line label. Do not send the QR image or activation code in a public form. Ask the provider to check provisioning, destination eligibility, and any account or profile state from its side. Apple likewise recommends having the error message and identifiers such as IMEI or EID ready when carrier help is needed.

If bars appear but apps do not load, use eSIM Installed but No Mobile Data. If the profile never appeared, read eSIM Activation Failed: What to Check Before You Retry. For a clean handoff, copy the fields in The eSIM Support Diagnostic Checklist.
