How to Set Up Dual SIM with a Travel eSIM
Keep a home number while using a travel eSIM with a careful dual-SIM setup that avoids accidental data use and support confusion.
Decide the job for each line before departure
Write down a simple plan: which line receives your usual calls and SMS, which line supplies cellular data, and whether the home line should remain enabled. A travel eSIM may be data-only, so it should not be assumed to replace calls, SMS, or emergency calling on the home line. Read the travel provider’s plan description rather than inferring features from the presence of an eSIM profile.
On supported iPhone models, Apple says two eSIMs can be active at once. It also warns that when two lines stay active, home-line capabilities continue and you might still incur roaming fees from the home eSIM. The safest approach is to select the travel line for data deliberately and review the home line’s roaming setting and plan terms before you travel.
Check the lock and line conditions
Dual SIM does not override a carrier lock. Apple states that an iPhone needs to be unlocked, or both cellular plans must be from the same carrier, and both plans need to be set up and ready to use. Android capability varies too: eSIM availability depends on the exact device, regional variant, OS, lock status, and provider support. Do not assume that a phone with a physical-SIM tray can use every eSIM or every pair of lines.
Label the lines in a way that makes sense under pressure, such as “Home calls” and “Travel data.” Before leaving Wi-Fi, switch Wi-Fi off and load a basic page. Then place a test call only if your calling line and plan permit it. This establishes which line is being used while you still have time to correct it.
Know what “No Service” on a second line can mean
During some calls, the other line can show no service. Apple explains that iPhone uses one cellular-data network at a time and describes conditions under which the other line may show “No Service” during a call. Treat that as a dual-SIM behaviour to investigate, not instant proof that the eSIM has failed.
For data that will not load, go to eSIM Installed but No Mobile Data. If the phone cannot register the travel line at all, use No Signal After Installing an eSIM in Europe. If you need a provider-ready record, follow The eSIM Support Diagnostic Checklist.
